Birth of an Insect

Inspired by Giger's "Alien" and Curt Sylak's "Fly" I created an image of a woman giving birth to an insect, in a manner that shows a cross between human’s and insect’s anatomy. After casting Tracy's body in plaster I sculpted the belly on it using Cheavant but not before I hacked the breasts off simply because they were in my way. In order to get the size and shape of the belly right I was using images of naked pregnant women as references. The research, however, wasn't easy; forget about Mother-Baby magazines, all the women in those are fully dressed. I therefore had to surf some seriously bizarre porno sites which featured pregnant women and so I was able to find what I needed. The opening of the insect's cocoon had to have a veginal feeling to it, and with the insect looking somewhat phallic I ended up with a rather perverse looking piece. Still I find it to be effective; it is a serious challenge creating something which isn't real but making the viewer believe it could actually be.
